What is Estill Voice Training®, and is it for me?
Estimated reading time: 3–4 minutes
On Sunday 9th November, I’ll be running another full-day Intro to Estill Voice Training® workshop in Canterbury, and if you’ve ever wondered how your voice works, or how to help others use their voice more confidently, this day could be for you.
We’re going to be learning in the beautiful and central Community Studio behind the Cathedral Gift Shop. This one-day, in-person session is designed to offer a friendly, practical and engaging introduction to Estill Voice Training®, and how it can support you, whether you're a singer, a teacher, a choir leader, MD, actor - or simply curious about the voice.
What is Estill Voice Training®?
Estill Voice Training® is a model for voice training that’s used by singers, actors, vocal coaches, speech therapists, and teachers around the world. It’s grounded in vocal science and designed to help you take conscious control of your sound, while keeping your voice healthy.
There’s no aesthetic bias in Estill. Whether you sing in a church choir, belt musical theatre, teach KS3 music, are in a folk band or prepare for public speaking, all vocal styles and goals are welcome.
At the heart of the method is this principle:
“Everyone has a beautiful voice – you just need to know how to use it.”
What will the workshop involve?
The day is a mix of practical exercises and lecture-style presentations with audio-visual examples. We’ll look at:
The anatomy and science of how your voice works
Listening to real examples of different vocal qualities, and learn to do them ourselves
Trying out hand signals and Voiceprint software to help visualise your voice - a strategy endorsed by recent neuroscience papers
Exercises - Estill “Figures” - to help you build control, strength and flexibility
Open coaching sessions (optional!) to try things out in practice
There will be a short mid-morning and mid-afternoon tea break (with biscuits, of course) and an hour off for lunch. You’ll be in the heart of Canterbury with plenty of nearby cafés and restaurants to explore.
Is this workshop for me?
Here’s a breakdown of who usually comes — and what they take away:
Singers
Want more control? Struggling with consistency? Whether you sing in choirs, bands, shows, or solo gigs, Estill gives you tools to sing how you want, when you want, with more confidence and ease.
Singing Teachers & Vocal Coaches
Looking to expand your toolkit? This workshop gives you a clear, structured approach to understanding and explaining vocal function.
Actors & Musical Theatre Performers

Choir Leaders & Musical Directors
Want to help your singers thrive? Estill provides tools that might help you diagnose and solve vocal issues in your group, and offer clearer guidance and warm-ups that actually work.
Curious Voice Users
Just interested in learning more about your voice? Not ready to commit to a 5-day course? This is the perfect low-pressure way to dip your toes in and find out if further Estill training (or even certification!) is for you.

Open Session
At the end of the day, there will be an optional open coaching session, where a few participants can perform a short piece (a song or text), and we explore how the Estill model applies in real time. Whether you participate or just observe, it’s always a highlight of the day!
